How we work
Redirection reaches six parts of a young person’s life.
Redirectional Therapy starts with a lasting relationship. Counselors earn trust first, then work with each young person across these areas.
- Education
- Employment and careers
- Recreation and sports
- Culture
- Community service
- Social activities
Programs
Programs that meet young people where they are.

Accessibility Statement
Our goal
Adult Friends for Youth wants everyone to be able to use this website, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, voice control, or magnification. We are building the site to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
What this demo includes
- A skip link, clear page landmarks, and one main heading per page.
- Visible keyboard focus on every link, button, and field.
- Text and controls that meet AA color contrast.
- Buttons and targets at least 44 pixels tall for easier tapping.
- Layouts that reflow at narrow widths and at 200% zoom without sideways scrolling, except for data tables.
- Form fields with visible labels and error messages that explain how to fix the problem.
- Hawaiian-language words marked with
lang="haw". Proper names such as place names are not marked, which WCAG allows.
What we have not done yet
This site is a proof of concept. It has not yet been tested with screen readers or reviewed by an outside accessibility specialist. We will do both before the real site launches, and we will update this statement with the dates and results.
Tell us about a barrier
If something on this site is hard to use, call (808) 833-8775 or email afy@afyhawaii.com. Tell us the page and what happened. [Response time to be set by AFY]

About This Demo
How this site would be run, updated, and kept safe by a small staff, at almost no monthly cost.
What’s real and what’s simulated
Real in this demo
- AFY’s mission, programs, contact details, and giving options, taken from public sources
- Mobile layout and keyboard navigation
- A palette switch at the top right, to compare two color schemes
- The Hawaiian spelling checker
- Static hosting, the same model Cloudflare Pages uses
Simulated for now
- The site assistant follows a script. The real one would be Claude connected to the site editor.
- The donation form, sponsor sign-in, and Google sign-in show sample screens only.
- Event dates, sponsor data, and photos are placeholders for AFY to supply.
How updates will work
Staff change content by talking to the assistant or using a simple editor. Code changes go through a technical reviewer. Money and donor records stay with a dedicated donation platform.
Describe
A staff member says what to add, in plain words.
Draft
The assistant fills in a draft and writes matching social posts.
Review
A person checks the draft, the photo permissions, and the spelling.
Publish
One click, and the site updates within about a minute.
| Piece | Tool | Expected cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website hosting | Cloudflare Pages | $0 | Free tier allows organizational use |
| Content editor | Sanity | $0 | Confirm free-tier limits before launch |
| Donations and sponsor portal | Givebutter (proposed) | $0 core | Funded by optional donor tips. AFY now uses Network for Good and PayPal. |
| Staff email and sign-in | Google Workspace for Nonprofits | $0 | If AFY qualifies |
| Domain name | afyhawaii.com | About $15–25 a year | Move to an AFY-owned registrar account |
| Social scheduling | Buffer | $0 to about $9 a month | Free plan covers 3 channels with limits; nonprofit discount on paid plans |
Built to WCAG 2.2 AA, then tested
Accessibility is a build requirement for the finished site, not a final polish. See the draft accessibility statement.
Built into this demo
- Skip link, landmarks, and one main heading per page
- Focus moves to the page heading when a page changes
- AA color contrast, checked on every color pair
- Real buttons, links, and labeled fields
- Errors that say what to fix, announced to screen readers
- No animation, and no time limits
Before the real site launches
- Automated scan (axe or Lighthouse) on every deploy
- Keyboard-only walkthrough of every page
- Screen reader testing with VoiceOver and NVDA
- Zoom and narrow-width checks
- Alt text required before any image publishes
- Outside accessibility review and a published statement
Hawaiian spelling
The ʻokina and kahakō change meaning and pronunciation, so the site treats them as required, not decorative.
ʻĀ ʻĒ ʻĪ ʻŌ ʻŪ ā ē ī ō ū ʻohana · kūpuna · ʻāina · Waiʻanae · Nānākuli
- The ʻokina is the real character (ʻ, U+02BB), never an apostrophe or curly quote.
- Kahakō use precomposed letters (ā, not a plus a separate macron).
- The editor flags common place names and words that are missing marks.
- Official names stay as registered, like “AFY Hawaii” on existing accounts. The checker skips those.
Succession plan
The site should never depend on one person. Every account belongs to AFY, has two admins, and is listed in a one-page runbook kept in the shared drive.
| Account | Owned by | Backup admin | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain registrar (afyhawaii.com) | AFY admin email | Board treasurer | Auto-renew on |
| Google Workspace | AFY super admin | Second super admin | Two-step sign-in with security keys |
| Cloudflare | AFY admin email | Technical volunteer | Hosting and DNS |
| Content editor | AFY admin email | Communications lead | Staff sign in with Google |
| GitHub | AFY organization | Technical volunteer | Code is never in a personal account |
| Donation platform | AFY finance lead | CEO | Donor records export monthly |
| Password vault | AFY organization | Board member | Holds recovery codes for all of the above |
The runbook covers
- How to publish, unpublish, and roll back a change
- Who to call, in order, if the site is down
- Where backups and donor exports live
- How to hand off the technical lead role
Recurring checks
- Quarterly: review who has access and remove departed staff
- Quarterly: test restoring the site from GitHub
- Yearly: accessibility review and domain renewal check
Questions for AFY staff
- A higher-resolution logo (SVG or EPS), and whether the logo’s green and light blue are official brand colors
- Current donation tools: contracts with Network for Good and PayPal, and whether donor history can be exported
- Is AFY on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 today?
- Who registered afyhawaii.com, and who can sign in to it?
- Who approves posts before they go live?
- How media releases for young people are collected and stored
- What sponsors ask for most: receipts, impact reports, or event recognition
- Date, venue, and details for the 40th anniversary celebration
- The current newsletter tool and mailing list
